Wii Twilight Hack
The twilight hack occurs when it takes advantage of an overflow error in the Twilight Princess. This error happens by downloading a special file that stores the name of a horse, Epona. Actually the file has a longer name and the Wii system crashes when it tries to load the horse’s name.
The crash triggers the system to run a loader program rather than the Twilight Princess’ code. Next the system loads a program coming from the Wii’s front SD card slot. Any program saved on the SD card with a boot.elf filename should run.
There are many applications that have been released and these can run using this method. And because the twilight hack loads a program by a glitch in the Twilight Princess’ process, the game needs to be loaded every time the homebrew application is run. Meanwhile there are some applications that can install custom Wii Menu channels so that the programs are run from the Wii Menu rather than through the hack.
To counteract the Twilight Hack, very recently, Nintendo released an update 3.3 for the Wii Menu. This deletes and prevents the storage of any unauthorized files saved in the Twilight Princess. But after 8 hours of releasing the update, a couple of bugs where found in the update and these can still allow a modified hack to take place. In addition, a newer version of the Wii Twilight Hack has been released to work on machines that were updataed to 3.3
